We’re off on a road trip in a Camper!

(Oh, and by the way, a quick tip whilst I am on the subject of packing – those blue and yellow bags from a well known Swedish furniture shop are the best- they take up no storage space once unpacked.)

Camper trip to the Moray Firth, Aberdeenshire

First stop Findhorn Aire site – a fabulous Aire site right next to the beautiful West Beach with black and grey waste disposal points and fresh water, run by the Findhorn Village Conservation Company.

That was the plan for the first night, however…

Four hours in and we were just north of Perth on our Camper trip to the Moray firth (normally an hour and 35 mins away from Peebles). Between the traffic getting to the Forth Road Bridge, the A9 being shut (Scotland’s main road to the Highlands) and the diversion being totally epic, our enthusiasm was waning, so after sitting in traffic for several hours going nowhere we spot a Forestry car park.

Its pushing 7pm now and almost dark, (makes waking up in the morning all the more exciting as who knows what views we’ll wake up to), so we decided to make that our home for the night. Ahh, the beauty of having your house on your back – we felt pretty smug watching the traffic queue for hours, dare I say.

We had planned to cook the first night, so had everything we needed, – Another tip, always have food to cook on the first night in the event of getting stuck in traffic (it’s a fairly common occurrence on Scottish roads!). And to wake up to these views from our Camper in the morning was the best.

After a good sleep we pack up and head for Findhorn, stopping off at the most amazing Deli/farm shop, called Thyme Deli at Errichel to get a few bits for our trip, which I hasten to add still took ages as we were not on the main road, but the detour for the scenery alone was well worth it.

We are absolute suckers for a local farm shop/Deli, and this gem which we stumbled upon, exceeded our expectations. Another huge advantage of a Camper road trip, having the freedom to roam and not taking the main roads! We will definitely be back. One place I was gutted to not being able to stop was the village of Dull (twinned with Boring, Oregon just for the photo to prove I’d been there!

Sadly, we missed our night at Findhorn, but we still went to visit.

After a late lunch of all our delicious goodies from Errichel Deli it was time to hit the beach. The beach is stunning, so we had a lovely walk along the beach to blow away the cobwebs (and work off some lunch), it was on to our next stop, West Beach Campsite, Hopeman https://westbeachcaravanpark.co.uk/ a quirky campsite partly set on the site of the old railway station where some of the former station and platform still exist. In fact the station waiting room is now the shower block!. There’s not much in Hopeman but again, a beautiful beach and a great place to base yourself for exploring the Moray Coast in one of our Campers.

The next day we take ourselves off along the coast through Lossiemouth and Cullen to Portsoy.

Portsoy is the most picturesque fishing port, once well known for Portsoy marble which used to be shipped to the one and only Versailles. We were a wee bit gutted we didn’t have time to explore Cullen more (which in fact where the delicious smoke fish soup Cullen Skink was born), is it looked like a great place to explore.

We then head to Elgin where we had table booked for a late lunch at Orrin Restaurant and Bar.

The food did not disappoint! If you’re in the area we would definitely recommend.

Our final day was a thankfully, uneventful drive home!

We were delighted that Master Zoom had graced us with the pleasure of his company (aged 16, not cool to hang out with the rentals and even more so that we were all still friends on day 4!

The Conclusion….

The Moray Firth is beautiful and well worth a visit in a motorhome. We just wished we had had more time, but at the same time, we fully discovered the beauty of spontaneous stopovers. When you cant get to where you set out to go, it doesn’t matter when you’ve got your hotel on wheels with you. Your ultimate destination will still be there the next day – as much as our trip was cut short due to traffic issues we still made it and discovered some fantastic places along the way.
