Taste of Outlander Tour

A Taste of Outlander!

Fancy following in Claire and Jamie’s footsteps? Outlander is filmed in Scotland, with many locations doubling for places as far afield as the Palace of Versailles or North Carolina! Here’s a taster of what you can find on a six night tour: You will need to be bright eyed and bushy tailed for this tour as there is a lot to fit in. We suggest that you have early starts to fit this tour in if you are an “Outlander” die hard!

Day 1

Collect your motorhome and get yourself up to the Linlithgow area ready for a full five days of Outlander heaven!

Overnight in the South Queensferry area

Day 2

From Midhope head along the coast to visit Blackness Castle – you may recognise it as Wentworth Prison where Jamie is tortured in Season 1. Known as “the ship that never sailed” Blackness is a fascinating visit. From here it’s a short drive to Linlithgow Palace, birthplace in 1542 of Mary, Queen of Scots. The beautiful fountain in the palace courtyard was said to have run with red wine during the visit of Bonnie Prince Charlie in 1745! The entrance was used during filming to recreate Wentworth Prison where Jamie is incarcerated.

Day 3

From Dysart you turn inland to Falkland. The village was transformed into Inverness for filming. One of the local inns was Mrs Baird’s guest house, and you can see the fountain, where the ghost of Jamie looks up at Claire’s room. Visit historic Falkland Palace, a favourite of the Stuart kings.

Day 4

You might start the day heading out towards the Queen’s View, a vantage point with beautiful views over Loch Tummel to the mountain Schiehallion. Head back to the main road and drive south. Chocoholics might fancy a stop at the multi award winning Highland Chocolatier – the signature velvet truffles created here have been voted Best Truffles in the World – twice! Carry on south to the Hermitage where there are some great (easy) walks in the forest to the Black Linn Falls. The Douglas firs here are among the tallest trees in Britain.

 

From Falkland you head north to Perth. Just to the west of the city you will find Tibbermore Parish Church, which features as Cranesmuir Church and the venue for Geillis Duncan’s witch trial in Season 1. Continue west to Drummond Castle Gardens where you can visit the beautiful formal gardens, which double for the gardens of the Palace of Versailles in France.

 

From Drummond Castle you drive south west to Doune, where you can visit Doune Castle AKA Castle Leoch, which was a real-life Jacobite stronghold in the 18th century. Scenes featuring Jamie’s cousin’s wine warehouse in Le Havre were filmed at nearby Deanston Distillery. Of course, it is whisky which is produced here, and not wine – take a tour (and enjoy a sample!) to learn more about Scotland’s national drink

Day 5

Start the day heading west through the Trossachs to Loch Katrine. This is a beautiful part of the world, and Loch Katrine was used as a location in Season 2. Here you can sail on the loch on board the steamship the SS Sir Walter Scott. Drive on over the Duke’s Pass, with stunning views over the surrounding countryside, to Aberfeldy and from there return towards Callander.  You continue on to Stirling where you can visit the impressive fortress of Stirling Castle, a favourite of the Stuart kings, besieged by the Jacobite Army not long before the Battle of Culloden in 1746.

Day 6

Head towards Falkirk where you can visit Callendar House – the 18th century working kitchens were used as part of Bellhurst Manor, the home of the Duke of Sandringham. From here head south, perhaps stopping in Penicuik to take a look at Glencorse Old Kirk (Please note the church is situated on private land owned by Glencorse House. Visits are possible, by appointment only). This beautiful old church is where Claire and Jamie got married in Season 1.   It’s a short drive from Penicuik back to Peebles.

Day 7

Return your motorhome. Once you have returned your motorhome if you’re not in a hurry to get home why not head into Peebles to see what our beautiful town has to offer, from wonderful independent shops to fabulous restaurants and cafes. Your holiday doesn’t have to end just because your motorhome hire has!

 

 

Please bear in mind our motorhomes are ready for collection in the afternoon, so you may have to stay your first night in the area of where the first day of the tour starts.

Your hire vehicle is due back in the morning after your last nights hire so we suggest you stay somewhere along your route home or locally to avoid a very early start and a long drive back!

Opening hours: There are lots of suggestions for places to visit on the following pages and, while we absolutely want you to make the most of your trip, it is important to note that many visitor attractions and places of interest now require you to book in advance, or may have restricted opening hours, or may be closed temporarily due to Covid-19. In addition, many places of interest in Scotland have seasonal opening hours and close in the winter months. Please be sure to follow the links to the places of interest mentioned in the suggested routes to check in advance of your visit and avoid disappointment on the day!
