A Highland Adventure

Head north for beautiful landscapes, Nessie and the Isle of Skye. There is so much to see and do in this vast expanse of wilderness, so you may wish to take more time.

Day 1

Leaving Peebles drive north by Edinburgh and cross the Firth of Forth by the Queensferry Crossing. Continue north to Perth, where you might like to visit Scone Palace, ancient site of the coronation of Scottish kings in days long gone. Perth Museum and Art Gallery has frequent changing exhibitions as well as a permanent collection relating to local history and is also worth a look. From Perth head north, perhaps stopping for a walk in the forest at The Hermitage, to Pitlochry. There are two distilleries in town, Edradour and Blair Atholl, or take a wander along by the River Tummel to see the impressive dam and the salmon ladder.

Day 2

North again from Pitlochry Blair Castle is well worth a visit. Ancestral home of the Duke of Atholl, the castle has an impressive collection of furniture, arms, lace and china. A bit further up the road, if you are in the mood for some retail therapy, stop at the House of Bruar which features all sorts of Scottish produce – everything from tweeds and woollens to shortbread and smoked salmon. Continue north over the Drumochter Pass into the Cairngorms National Park towards Inverness. Just outside town is the Culloden Battlefield site where you can learn more about the last pitched battle fought on British soil which took place here in 1746. Close to the battlefield is Clava Cairns, a fascinating Bronze Age site with standing stones and burial mounds. From Clava Cairns it is a short drive to Inverness, the capital of the Highlands.

Day 3

From Inverness drive west towards Loch Ness. Get your camera ready just in case you catch a glimpse of the reclusive monster! Here you can visit the romantic ruins of Urquhart Castle on the shores of the loch or learn more about the geology of the area and the science behind the monster legend at the Loch Ness Exhibition Centre.

At Invermoriston turn north west to Dornie.  The Highland scenery here is spectacular, and perhaps you’ll also spot some of the local wildlife – deer, golden eagles or maybe even the tribe of feral goats!  At Dornie you can visit picture perfect Eilean Donan Castle, located on a small island at the junction of three lochs. From Eilean Donan it’s a short drive to Kyle of Lochalsh where you cross the bridge to the Isle of Skye. You stay on Skye for the next three nights.

Day 4 & 5

Skye is quite a large island, and there is lots to see and do. Here are some suggestions as to how to spend your time:

A visit to Dunvegan Castle, one of the oldest inhabited castles in Scotland and ancestral home of the Clan Macleod.

A scenic drive around the Trotternish peninsula, stopping at Kilt Rock, the Museum of Island Life and Flora MacDonald’s grave.

Check out the dinosaur footprints at Staffin, before heading west to discover great views from the lighthouse at Neist Point and to take a tour of the Talisker Malt Whisky Distillery

A wander around the island capital Portree. Boat trips (and great fish and chips!) are available from the harbour.

Take a walk to the crystal clear Fairy Pools or to the Old Man of Storr for amazing views towards the mountains of the mainland.

Day 6

Drive south on Skye to Armadale where you take the ferry to Mallaig on the mainland (see CalMac for ferry times & prices). There are some lovely places to eat in Mallaig where you can try the local seafood before heading south to Glenfinnan. Here at the visitor centre you can learn more about the 18th century Jacobite rebellion and see the monument dedicated to Bonnie Prince Charlie and the start of the uprising here in 1745. You can also walk up to a viewpoint which looks out over Loch Shiel and to the 21 arch Glenfinnan Viaduct which features in the Harry Potter films.

From Glenfinnan continue south to Fort William. Ben Nevis, the UK’s highest peak, is situated in Glen Nevis just outside town and there are some nice walks in the glen.

Day 7

From Fort William drive south along Loch Linnhe and over the Ballachulish Bridge to Glencoe. The mountain scenery here is spectacular and you can stop at the Glencoe visitor centre to learn more about the fragile ecology of the glen and also of the infamous massacre of the Clan Macdonald which took place here in 1692.

Continuing south you cross the isolated Rannoch Moor and reach Crianlarich, where you head east to Stirling. Options here include a visit to historic Stirling Castle, the (Sir William) Wallace Monument or the Bannockburn Battlefield site.

Day 8

Return your motorhome. Once you have returned your motorhome if you’re not in a hurry to get home why not head into Peebles to see what our beautiful town has to offer, from wonderful independent shops to fabulous restaurants and cafes. Your holiday doesn’t have to end just because your motorhome hire has!

Please bear in mind our motorhomes are ready for collection in the afternoon, so you may have to stay your first night in the area of where the first day of the tour starts.

Your hire vehicle is due back in the morning after your last nights hire so we suggest you stay somewhere along your route home or locally to avoid a very early start and a long drive back!
